Florida’s village of Key Biscayne is located on the beautiful island of Key Biscayne, which is just off the coast of Miami-Dade County. Though it’s an island, it connects to Miami using the Rickenbacker Causeway.
Development of the town was a little slow because before the Rickenbacker Causeway, there was very little means of setting up residential development opportunities. The northern part of the island had formerly been an enormous coconut plantation. Inexpensive houses were offered by the Mackle Construction Company in 1951.
Key Biscayne has some fascinating history as well. The Watergate scandal began, in a sense, in Key Biscayne – Nixon purchased three homes to form what would be known as the “Nixon Compound.” The Watergate break-in was discussed at the Nixon Compound before it actually transpired. The Department of Defense actually spent $400,000 on a helicopter landing pad.
Key Biscayne is prime real estate, and the construction of homes and condos has made the population grow considerably. Now, voter approval is required on new construction. Several hotels and condos, including the Ritz-Carlton, are present on Key Biscayne.
Key Biscayne has its own magazine as well as a newspaper, The Islander News. The island has recovered from Hurricane Andrew, which caused some flooding of businesses and homes alike. Now, however, the town includes a recreation center with a pool and other amenities. Key Biscayne has its own fire and rescue station. The downside of the development, though, is the fact that wildlife has been on the decline – it’s difficult to preserve the environment in the face of rapid growth.
