Manalapan was started as a homestead. Specifically, it was the homestead of George K. Carter, and it was granted by then-President Benjamin Harrison. The town might have been named for a township of the same name in New Jersey.

As of 2000, this town had a population of 321. Its area is 2.4 square miles, making it relatively spread-out. Though it’s small, it does have some interesting trivia surrounding it. It was one of the filming locations for the 1981 movie, Body Heat.
