Indiantown, a community in Florida’s Martin County, started out as a trading post run by Seminole Indians. It was taken over by white settlers in the 1890s. The installation of the Seaboard Airline Railway helped bring the town to prominence, as the railroad planner intended for Indiantown to be the bustling southern end of the rail line.
The plan didn’t materialize, though – a drop in pace of land sales and development, coupled with the death of the railroad developer, ended the plan for Indiantown. However, the developer left the town with Seminole Inn, which now is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Indiantown is quaint, with six square miles of land and a population – as of the 2,000 census – of 5,588. It’s part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Though it’s home to the railroad hub that wasn’t, Indiantown also hosts Payson Park, a winter training center for Thoroughbreds. Payson Park is a 400-acre facility with trails, pastures, and a training track to help keep equine “campers” relaxed and focused on training.
